Go Local
Story in the LA Times today about big banks set to revoke free checking accounts. While this comes a no surprise, the writer/editor of the article is incorrect in stating that going to a local bank will suddenly limit you from a vast ATM network provided by a big bank. I have a completely free account with Salem Five Bank, which has about 9 branches on the North Shore of Massachusetts. My account comes with free worldwide ATM use, the only requirement is direct deposit. So do yourself a favor and stick it to the banks. Research your local options, save some money, and be treated like the valued customer that you are.
